"For
a number of
years, my friends and I trained for extensive bike rides that went all
the way from North Carolina to DC. I honestly did not think I
could do those rides. Sometimes, I didn’t do as well as I
wanted. But, in the process of trying hard, I learned a lot about
myself and how a committed community of people can achieve big goals.
And I mean BIG goals -- like finding a cure for myotonic muscular
dystrophy." Mike Hamlin
On October 9, 2010, the Miles for Muscles Ride will
take place – 100 miles all in one day from Salisbury, MD to the
Atlantic Ocean and back. The Miles for Muscles ride will be part
of a larger ride, the annual Sea
Gull Century. Miles for Muscles
riders and ride crew are committed to raising $650 each to fund vital
research that is nearing a cure for MMD. I am going to train and
do my best to ride the 100 miles on October 9.
| We
ask you to join
us. All levels of riders are very welcome. This is not a
race, it is a ride. We are steady, go the distance and
we have fun. |
100% of the money raised – every cent of it ---
goes
to support the research team led by Dr.
Mani Mahadevan at the
University of Virginia. “Mani” is among the leading
researchers investigating the complexities of myotonic dystrophy and,
along with other researchers, is in the process of identifying
potential cures. In his laboratory, Dr. Mahadevan has been able
to turn off the myotonic-causing mechanisms in mice. That’s how
far the research has progressed. But we need to find and test the
drugs that will help us cross the finish line for a cure.
Train with us, learn about yourself and your own
potential in the process, and make a difference in the search for a
cure for MMD. Encourage your friends and family to join this
winnable fight, too. You don’t have to be real fast, just willing
and ready for memories.
